Sunday 16th February
So, after Storm Dennis creating the most horrendous night of wind and rain and with the wind still blowing a hooley – and up to 60mph winds forecast today – we decided to give the motorway a try. We kept our speed down to around 50 and headed south east. Other traffic was also going slowly and, being a Sunday, there were very few lorries. Apart from a few massive gusts and the overhead signs frequently saying ‘vente souffle violent’, all went smoothly. Thankfully the further south we went the less the wind and, later a blue sky appeared above clear roads.

We arrived at Camping Merry-sur-Yonne via two very narrow bridges, over the Canal du Nivernais and River Yonne, which made us both squeeze our buttocks together to pass! The site was run by a lovely guy whose previous career had been as a captain moving posh yachts around the world. We ate in the the site restaurant. The joint-owner was dressed as a chef but spent the intervening time between us ordering from the menu and our meals arriving chatting to us, so I’m not sure who was doing the cooking! Definitely a ‘best bit’.
We were glad we got to know him as we were to need his and his partner’s help in the morning.
