Fast to Ferry Meadows

12th-14th September

Saturday 12th September

A snap decision – a two-night motorhome break at Ferry Meadows, Peterborough; dropping the motorhome off for various works on Monday on the way home. We packed minimum stuff in minium time. Unusually, we took the car so were able to keep the bikes on its tow bar saving the double-shuffle.

Pretty busy on site – drove around one side of the site, then over the road and around the other side of the site, and then back around the first side again before deciding on a pitch!

An evening cycle around Ferry Meadows Country Park, which is right outside the gate. You can circle the entire lake on shared walking/cycle paths.

Followed by a candle-lit dinner outside.

I love my Beach Hut candle holders

Sunday 13th September

Breakfast outside – yay! Cooked on the BBQ which saves a lot of clean-up inside.

Husband had come up with a cycling plan. Then the neighbour came over to ask about out electric bikes and told us about their favourite route through Peterborough, out into the fens and on to Whittlesey – all on cycle paths. We now had a new plan!

During this ride Husband explained that I need to communicate more clearly when I’m riding my bike. You see I like to stop to look at things; I very much enjoyed stopping to look at the Flag Fen Sewage Treatment works just outside Peterborough. You can see how wide the cycle path is ……. so how did he manage to ride his front tyre directly into my rear tyre with all that available space?! It was almost declared a major incident. Yup ……….. it was definitely my fault so I now have to point down at the ground as a warning sign when I’m stopping!! 🚴🏻‍♀️🤪

Whittlesey is a pleasant town with a market square and buttercross. Confusingly, the train station is spelt Whittlesea! We found a Wetherspoons right on the square inside The George Hotel. The food, the app and service were great and they do seem to have made good use of a lovely building which may otherwise not be in such a good state of repair. https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/pubs/all-pubs/england/cambridgeshire/the-george-hotel-whittlesey

Some of the cycle route runs alongside the Nene Valley Railway.

Tonight is a BBQ with candles and twinkly lights.

Monday 14th September

Today is the day all the outstanding problems on the motorhome get fixed – the broken habitation door handle from Spain; the non-returning canopy (again); the lost waste tap from Devon and a few other bits and bobs.
