Tuesday 3rd March
We have a plan, we will visit the village of Vilafamés which is much lauded by other ‘Ralliers’ on site. There is mention of a big, hanging rock looming dangerously over a road!

It is a pretty 40 minute drive to Vilafamés – we leave the site out the back way (where no motorhome should go!) and after only a mile or so come across a menagerie of small animals on a farm. I screech to a halt as I think I saw an ostrich – no really there were several! Random.

Vilafamés looked good from a distance – a hilltop village. We easily found somewhere to park and wandered into a nice café for elevenses. Vilafamés is wonderful; it over-delivered in every way – it is beautiful, quaint, Spanish and then it surprises you with a gallery of modern art which had some great pieces and was much bigger than it looked from the outside. When Husband arrives we’ll definitely come back here!
Castell de Vilafamés – at the very top of the village:-

We set off back towards Alcossebre and decide to visit our second castle of the day – Castillo de Xivert – which can be seen from the Autopista (motorway) dominating the top of a hill. We followed the SatNav – not good – it took us on the motorway, zooming past the castle and almost back into Peñiscola before we could get off and loop back on smaller roads. A ‘Rallier’ told us where to turn off; he said don’t blink or you’ll miss the turn. Of course we blinked, but were able to do a U-turn and get it right the second time!
After a winding drive, which became rather bumpy too, we arrived and had the whole castle almost to ourselves – stunning views from the top.
Returning to the site – we had planned to eat in Alcossebre but after a fabulous Spanish lunch in Vilafamés – ordered and explained with hand signals/gesticulations – we decided to eat and drink in with a few ‘bits and pieces’ ham, pate, cheese etc. – lovely.
Initial conversation with Em on WhatsApp this evening about her and Teddy’s weekend visit and this coronavirus thing. We decide to ‘wait and see’ for now ……………. ho ho, little did we know!
